8 Uhr morgens und es ist absolut still. Nur Vogelgezwitscher. Keine Autos, keine Menschenseele in Sicht. Nur die grüne Sumpflandschaft, Fischreiher und andere Vögel, deren Namen ich nicht kenne, sind zu sehen. Und eine Schildkröte, die sich auf einem Fleckchen Erde, das aus dem Tümpel ragt, in der Sonne aalt.
So könnte jeder Morgen starten, denke ich mir. Im Einklang mit der Natur – bei meinem Besuch im Blackwater Natural Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge im US-Bundesstaat Maryland verstehe ich wieder einmal, was das bedeutet: Ruhe, ein Gefühl von Frieden und endlich richtig Durchatmen zu können.
Wir fahren weiter entlang des Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway im US-Bundesstaat Maryland, einer der vielen schönen Nebenstraßen, die sich in der Nähe der amerikanischen Hauptstadt Washington, DC prima für einen Roadtrip eignen. Von Cambridge aus, einem kleinen, charmanten Örtchen ganz in der Nähe des Wildlife Reservats, geht es weiter nach St. Michaels, an die Chesapeake Bay.
Das Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum: Von Land,Wasser und Leuten
Einen Besuch im Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen, auch wenn man kein eingefleischter Schifffahrts-Fan ist. Hier kann man nicht nur alles über die Krabben- und Austernfischerei lernen, die in der Gegend seit Generationen Tradition ist, auch Boote werden hier noch selbst gebaut und restauriert. Der aktuelle Stolz der Zimmermänner ist die „Rosie Parks”, ein 60 Jahre alter Austernkutter, der vor einem Jahr wieder hergerichtet wurde und jetzt in weißer Pracht erstrahlt. Vom Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum starten täglich mehrere Bootstouren raus auf die Chesapeake Bay und das lasse ich mir natürlich nicht entgehen. Die Crew erzählt mir Geschichten aus ihrem Leben, von der Landschaft, dem Meer und den Menschen, die hier leben. Die Sonne steht jetzt schon hoch am Himmel und ich bin froh über den Fahrtwind. Und was für eine Aussicht sich vom Boot aus bietet: Blaues Wasser und eine wunderschöne, grün bewachsene Küste.
Easton – eine Stadt voller Charme
Die Türen stehen den Besuchern entlang des Byways an der Chesapeake Bay immer offen. So empfängt mich Doorman Dwayne im Tidewater Inn im Städtchen Easton, eine knappe halbe Autostunde von St. Michaels entfernt, mit einem breiten Lächeln und erzählt mir später, dass er den besten Job der Welt hat, weil er hier so viele interessante Menschen trifft.
Easton hat Charme! Die vielen süßen Holzhäuschen mit ihren Verandas und die alten Villen geben der Stadt irgendwie Südstaaten-Flair. Die Stadt wirkt gemütlich und hat trotzdem alles, was größere Städte auch haben: tolle Restaurants und Cafés, Museen, Kunst-Galerien, Bed & Breakfasts Pensionen und selbst ein Kino gibt es hier.
Und als ich am Abend in einem der weißen Holzschaukelstühle vor dem Hotel sitze und auf die Stadt schaue, ist da wieder dieses friedliche Gefühl. Oh Maryland, wir werden uns wiedersehen!
